A short post, and unfortunately rather blurry pics of the work in progress…I promise I’ll take better ones when I get this done!
The fabric is of course from The Textile Centre on ebay, I bought 2 panels, each with 3 large orange roses on a random graffiti/newsprint background. Dawn didn’t really fancy large roses on her bum or the..er..rose garden, so we placed the pattern on the left hip, front and back. There was no way to match it, but it’s large and abstract enough not to matter much.
It’s only on the left front of the top, Katherine Tilton’s V8793. I’ve omitted the cuffs and collar, a there’s enough going on. Sleeves in bargain black mesh from Barry’s Fabric Superstore.
The fabric is very thin and uber stretchy, more like tights than anything else- the kind of fabric that annoyingly snags on every bit of rough skin on your fingers as you work with it! I underlined the trews [DK V1440 again, cut short]with cheapo jersey from the Rag Market, bought for just such emergencies, at a mahoosive 50p/metre. Whizzed together mostly on the overlocker. They came out too large…the third pair from the same pattern, which shows how unpredictable stretch fabrics can be.
I fancied putting a V of mesh on the outside leg seam at the hem, but I had to take them in so much I sacrificed it. Shame, it was cute!
The neckline will get a plain band facing, my preferred T shirt neckline finish. I wanted to check the fit before doing any finishing…just as well. It’s a tad large, and marginally too long [even though she’d asked for length this time, sigh]. It needs a bit of shaping, but I’m loathe to just take it in at the sides, because..
…she wants to go with the punky vibe. So I dragged out a couple of short zips with decorative pulls, salvaged from the infamous disaster of the Hot Patterns Agostini jacket. You can read about THAT on The Sewing Forum if you want, I can’t bear to dredge it up today. [Maybe later, heh heh]. I played for a bit, pleating, gathering/folding and using the zips to keep it all in place. I think it will work, but I haven’t sewn them on yet until the neckline’s stabilised. The fabric really is very very stretchy.
Anyway, just a progress report. Late working evening tomorrow, so no sewing now til Friday [poop!] The little hobbit trews are done, the top won’t take long, then pics of my lovely missus modelling the ensemble.
