…comes in threes?
I had some crappy news last week.
The first was the not unfamiliar announcement that there are impending redundancies at work, and we won’t actually know if we have jobs in September, until decisions are made. Great. As the main breadwinner, that’s potentially utterly disastrous.
The second was a very stressful phone call from my doctor-daughter: we found out recently that a close relative has a particularly virulent strain of breast cancer. Doc-D works in oncology, so was immediately very worried, and asked me about any family history. I knew that there’d been 2 other instances on their father’s side, but knew no more than that.
When she rang back, it turns out that have been AT LEAST 6 other cases in the close family, and that all in all that puts all my kids on a 50% likelihood of developing one of the related cancers. So at 29, and not yet having had any kids of her own, she’s considering preventative hysterectomy and mastectomy.
Not really expecting any useful comments on this, just needed to get it off my chest. Sorry!
