Hilarity! I cut out the toile a week ago, but the sewing table has been swamped with silver pleating, so I only got the toile sewn up this afternoon. Pretty straightforward, as these things are voluminous. I shortened the legs by 2″, going by the finished inside leg measurement quoted on the instructions.
The instructions. Hmmm. Very detailed, and too sparse at the same time. I don’t know if I’m missing something, but I don’t see any command to sew up the inside leg anywhere…could be confusing [and potentially indecent] for someone who follows rules blindly!
They do come with loads of historical info, and a sort of handbook of handsewing techniques. Lovely.
I was skipping steps though, as I wasn’t going to do the slash pocket insertion or waistband facing on a toile- I really only needed to see if the proportions are OK, especially on the knee position. I’ve therefore only got the pocket pieces very roughly attached, and the side fronts, which will button, are left open for now.
I’m not sure about waist sizing yet- these are intended to be worn with the riding jacket, which is sized to be worn over a corset, and is also boned. I may compromise, make them to fit my unholy girth, and wear an underbust corset over the top. Very steampunk.
I haven’t bothered with the leg fastening either, as you can see. Just as well as it turns out, because they would NOT have fastened. I don’t consider myself to have large calves- they’re muscular, but have never given me trouble when wearing boots! These must have been sized for someone with chicken legs…
I think I’ll omit the leg fastenings, make them up as they are, and insert an elastic gusset of some sort. Opinions please…
They look very nice tucked into boots, the wife said ‘Oooh! Vita Sackville-West!” which is a Good Thing in her opinion. I like the look of the toile fabric, so I think I’ll go for one of the cream/beige fabrics I spied on ebay before Christmas.
Which one do you think would be best? Both are the same price [£5.99/HALF meter]
They make me laugh, which is great!
