Although I had hoped to finish this today, and haven’t, I’m very pleased with progress…from the seemingly interminable stage of stitching down seam allowances, and the similarly tedious thread-tracing the wolf design onto the back of the jacket, I finally got onto attaching the soutache this morning.
The first sleeve went very slowly, as I got the hang of it all, working out the best way to push the braid down its internal threads, forcing it into curves with the right convex/concave turn required. I also had to play about with Fraycheck to neaten the ends- I hate that stuff!
The ‘cornelli’ style twiddling was also slow at first- I find that the more random a design is, the harder it is to maintain scale and balance. I’m picking up speed now though, and just thought I’d post some pics of the sleeve cuffs and the lapel/collar area, which will be completely en-twiddled quite quickly now I think.
That will just leave the wolves for tomorrow…
The end is in sight!
You are a braver man than I, Gunga Din….

This is such an amazing and inspiring project. I’m totally in love with all you make, and this jacket is fab. I’m beginning to covet one for myself – but don’t feel like putting all the work needed into a project to fit a body I’m less than happy with. But really, this is awesome! And I totally love the soutache. That’s really my kind of embellishment.

I’m loving it too- I think that’s why it’s taking me so long, I keep stopping to admire it! As for body issues, this goes over a corset: my lumpy and droopy middle would keep me well away from such a style otherwise!

I might have to consider a corset then. Hmmmm… *ponders*

Hehe…We’ll see. There are some other projects to finish first. I really should see if there are some reenactment groups around, to get a chance to wear such finery. If I make it, that is.

I can guarantee you’ll find a local steampunk group full of people who just want an excuse to dress up, act silly, and drink tea/eat cake. Perfect!

You’re probably right, they’re just in hiding. Or so it seems to me. So far I’ve only seen teens, and trying to join them would be a bit silly – not to mention that my daughter would protest.

Definitely something that [from what I see] very much attracts older people with a sense of style and fun…and LOADS of kids. Ignore your daughter, what does she know? lol My kids have been ashamed of me for EVER

I second, third and fourth all the previous comments. I hated sewing on that stuff, I ended up perfecting the art of machine sewing it on before the construction was finished and catching the cut ends in a seam somewhere or other. Not as complicated a pattern that you used though. 🙂

I’m quite enjoying it, to my own surprise!

Wow Oh Wow. Wonderwoman. You really are making such a fabulous jacket. I love this effect. I don’t want you to finish (how selfish of me…)

Hahaha! We’re watching all the Game of Thrones season 5 extra features, and the sewing is GALLOPING along…I’ll be starting on the wolf part in the next hour. Then bones, then buttonholes. Who knows? I might finish today after all…

Wow, looks fabulous. I love the look of soutache braid but its something I haven’t attempted.

It’s easier than I thought- fairly fiddly but not impossible. I wouldn’t fancy doing this on a machine though…
