Anyone remember this from 1969?
I love that book, although the TV series was a bit disappointing! Anyway, why the reference to owls? Because I just made a top from some cool ‘Hiding Owl’ fabric which I found on MyFabrics. It was a payday indulgence, a bit of retail therapy which I justified [it’s a bit pricey for a jersey, at £15.29/m] because they’d sent me a money-off voucher. I did only buy 1m though, so had to be a bit careful with the cutting out.
I didn’t bother to try to pattern match, there wouldn’t have been enough, and the sleeves are the length they are…just because!
I went for a tried and tested pattern, Kwiksew 3658, which I’ve made up loads of times, as tops and dresses. None of the dresses have stayed the course, but the tops get worn a lot. My favourite white one died a couple of weeks ago after I spot cleaned some food splashes off the front, then forgot to run the washing machine. It went all mouldy, and had to go in the bin, dammit!
This was cut out in my monster session at the weekend, then sewn up in about 45 minutes last night. A very quick fix, and much happiness. I wore it to work today, and it cheered me up despite a horrendous day.
God I look old…
The jersey has a lovely feel, it’s quite firm and stable, and sewed up like a dream. It’s almost entirely done on the overlocker, except the CF seam, which has an ingenious construction, and then I overlocked, turned and zigzagged the hems.
Here’s a peek at the inside- the front is doubled which prevents bras showing through- a nice touch.
And that’s it really, I may nip into the sewing room and knock up another couple of these, very wearable, and less boring than plain T shirts.
Lovely fabric – worth spending all that money…

Indeed- and fifteen quid for a nice top isn’t excessive.

Cor, that is one fabulous T. Owls rock and you have really done them justice. I just can’t imagine making something in 45 minutes but then again I must be the world’s slowest sewer and only have time to read about sewing at the moment. What a fabulous pattern and really good that it only takes 1m. Will you make more? Xx

I already have about 4 off this pattern, they get worn a lot, and yes, there will be more. Easy, comfy, flattering- works for me!

Gorgeous fabric, and the pattern is very similar to my favourite Savage Coco t-shirt. Love it.
I do remember the Owl Service. Alan Garner? Can’t remember details but do recall a lack of owls.

I knew I’d seen something on several blogs which is the spit of my good old Kwiksew! I think mine came first tbh [oops]. It does look to be identical, strange that don’t you think? Ahem

I loved the Owl Service, but the Weirdstone of Brisinghamen was my favourite book, especially since it was set just down the road a bit. Happy Days! I love the Owl top too. I have the pattern and have yet to make it. Perhaps in Flowers! It looks a really useful thing too.

flowers!!! then we’ll need to photoshop a couple of pics together. Oh. But then they might get scratchy in the attic. Scared now… The Weirdstone is an amazing book, I still get the heeby jeebies about the bit where the lad gets stuck in the dwarf tunnel, jammed with his sword. Amazingly claustrophobic…

I was an Alan Garner addict and devoured the books when young. Only problem was the girls were always the sidekicks. Anyway, I will try the top, and if I find flowers will send a photo! 🙂 More likely to be boring old plain though.

I suppose most of the books back then had girls as side kicks. I also love Susan Cooper’s ‘The Dark is Rising’ sequence, at least the girls got one whole book to themselves in that.

Just watched the video and then looked it up on Wiki. I missed this at the time – wrong generation but I liked the video, quite spooky. Anyhoo….. half an hour later, your owl top is super fun and I am not surprised it cheered you up on your dreary day. You don’t look old. Wish I looked as young as you, in fact I wish I was as young as you. 😀

Thanks- I’m in love with my owls, I actually wanted to wear it again today but I know my students would comment!

You look really nice (and actually not old). The purple, the print, and the neckline are all very flattering on you. I didn’t watch the Owl Service but my brother loved it, and the book.

Aw thanks- that’s very sweet of you. I don’t actually mind getting older, I’m just frequently shocked by the speeding up post-menopause. I look more like my great aunt every day, and she’s over 90…

I love it what fabulous colours. I’m not surprised that it didn’t take you long to make it, when you’ve made something a few times it does get quicker to do. By the way, you’re not as old as me and never will be – haha. When I look in the mirror I see my paternal grandmother – its the bags under the eyes, she wasn’t a very nice woman either which is a bit worrying.
