You know how sometimes, you tell yourself something like ‘that’s all the tricky stuff done, soon be finished’ and then you realise it ruddy well isn’t?
Lace is all on, fiddly piped waistbands are on, started to sew the zip in…and then remembered. All those buttons. Aargh!
The pattern instructions aren’t very specific about the size of button to use, and when I went to the market I just got what I fancied. Turns out I didn’t get enough for starters…and also, the high collar actually fastens with buttons and elastic loops, but the rest of the dress back just gets a zip, and loads of tiny buttons sewn alongside it as a mock fastening. THIRTY or more of them. Hmmm. I bought little pearly grey ones, but only got 20. Not to worry, I’ll space them out. But I hate the look of buttons just sewn next to a zip, so I need to make all the little elastic loops. TWENTY of them. And some on the collar.
And then I went and bought self cover buttons [the devil’s work, as I recall from last time I bothered to use them, probably 30 years ago!] Teeny tiny ones for the collar and ‘cuffs’, medium sized ones for the lapels, and large ones for the skirt. The only ones that are actually functional are on the back neck of the collar…
How many buttons then? 20+6+8+4+6=44 buttons, 24 of them to be covered. Oh lord. I had hoped to have this done for this weekend [Steampunks in Space at the National Space Centre] but I think not!
Ah well. I’ve started back at work [hard] and I’m slowly adjusting to my new medication dose [slow] and I have a tiny bit of sew-jo, [teeny tiny] but concentration is not great. I’m trying to be inspired by this year’s SWAP rules, but I’m not really feeling it yet, and all I actually want to do is cut out some more goodies, rather than actually finish the current projects. Bad Fairy. I know if I stop before I finish this, it’ll NEVER be done… You know, I’d better look like Kate Winslett when I finish this!
I’ll leave you with a taste of The Men That Will Not Be Blamed For Nothing, a brilliant steampunk band, with a lot of punk…I went to see them on Sunday, and I’ll see them again on Saturday, huzzah!
