Vogue’s autumn collection always gladdens my heart- the summer one is just…well, impractical. It seems to be all little skimpy party frocks, and the winter one is all HUGE party frocks…all in all, autumn and spring styles suit my lifestyle, and the English climate, much better.
Here are the ones that jumped out at me, and will soon stretch my pattern collection even further.
V1561, an interesting top with cool details
V1556- less likely to be made up, I doubt it is really suited to my apple-barrel shape, but it’s really interesting. [I can’t be as enthusiastic as some about all these very same-y Indie garments, so shapeless, plain and dull] Maybe with a little boning in that belt?
The top-stitched darts are really cool
V9628 has a certain gothic art teacher flair to it- Dracula’s artistic aunty? It may be similar to some I already have, but it’s different enough to merit a go.
V1564- where would Autumn be without a coat? This isn’t anything wildly special, but I do like that collar/hood.
Anything caught your eye? Vogue really does still have it!
I had a look earlier and I’m sorry to say that I’m not really inspired.

we all have our personal preferences- like I say. I can take or leave the summer collections, but autumn is my time!

I love the one with the pleated skirt! I was just thinking the other day that I was ready to see those make a comeback.

Oh wow. Yes, I agree, there’s something really impressive about this collection. Being an ‘ambitious beginner’ who is not being especially interested in grading up a pattern, and being rather on the top end of Vogue’s sizing, I don’t pick one up unless it’s STUNNING, has something I want to try, or something I think I’ll definitely wear – but this time I can see two or three I’ll certainly buy. I haven’t felt so much ‘woooah’ in a while, I generally look over new pattern collections with a lot of ‘eh.’

Bear in mind their ease allowance is often as much as 5″ over measurements quoted. There wouldn’t be much grading up for most styles, other than the FBA most of us need [when will they realise average bodies have changed?]

And ‘ambitious beginner’ is the only type of beginner that should exist. Throw caution to the winds, that’s how you learn quickly!

I concur with your choices, with knobs on. It’s not necessarily that I can see myself wearing all or perhaps any of them, but they do look designed and that”s more than can be said for the vast majority of indie offerings. It gladdens the heart to add a pattern with features to the collection even if they don’t get sewn, (though the tunic type top and the mac are likely to fit into most wardrobes somewhere). The tunic flags itself up as a good pattern for the special but rather small piece of fabric we’ve all got in stash which is probably just enough for the bodice panels.

Exactly! I know that technically it’s no big deal to add in design lines and do some blocking…but it would involve tracing, and copying and faffing…and having the ability to design. not me, I can choose colours and styles and fabrics, but I couldn’t fully design something original from scratch!

Vogue winter collection is always the best. Yes I like the Zandra Rhodes top and the jersey dresses with the bits at the sides too! I love the pinafore dress with the pleats but I know it won’t suit me as you need a waist for dresses like that. Sigh!

hence corsetting the belt a little…maybe

I am loving that red dress!! With a big fat belt around the middle that would totally be my thing 😍

V1556 is really cool! Massively impractical for me, but I like the look so much I might have to buy it anyway. I’m certain my husband wouldn’t object. 😉 I do wish they’d hemmed the skirt of the sample, though – that fraying edge is annoying me, especially with how tailored the rest of the outfit is.

never ever tried a vogue pattern – not sure why but maybe because they never seem to be discounted. Love the look of these so maybe I should save up! You mention half price sale….my ears pricked….when are they likely to be on sale – any ideas (sorry I know you’re not a vogue rep but I love a bargain).

THey go on sale as often as everything else- if you’re in the US it’s worth joiing club BMV as you get plenty of bargains. The postage to the UK is massive though. Prices come down once they aren’t the ‘new’ patterns, so I wait anyway…then there are periodic sale son most sites, several times a year. I get emails so I don’t pay attention to when they’re due!

Those are lovely choices. I love the top and the dress with the belt. I should start putting boning in my belts … see if I can get that skinny waist look … second thought … I don’t think it will help me much! 😂

It takes proper corsetting to get the waist [well, it does for me] but as a neat finish, with an obi style thing like that, boning would be vital just to stop it folding in half permanently!

I was a bit disappointed with this collection. I liked the Rachel Comey striped dress and the Lialia coat but there wasn’t any must-have for me this time. And I’d just cleared a box of old shoes to repurpose as pattern storage too! I do not understand why they led the collection with the Guy Laroche dress. It is just…strange (and I say this as someone who owns many of their previous Guy Laroche patterns, including many of the weirder ones).

*skips off to remind self of the Laroche dress*. Oh yeah, THAT one. Lovely fabrics, unwearable dress. It doesn’t work on any level as far as I’m concerned. Do these designers STILL not realise that breast pockets do not sit nicely on breasts? Keep ’em for the menswear guys…

Ha ha I agree with you about breast pockets in general but having said that I’m currently cutting out the Vogue Guy Laroche shirt dress from a year or two ago which has very fancy breast pockets. My theory is that they are there so you don’t need to wear a bra with the original dress, which is in pretty transparent white fabric and has a hugely deep back neckline opening. If they look awful my plan is just to rip them off; the dress also has inseam pockets and I’ve already adjusted my pattern to be wearable with a bra. But I’m hoping I’ll get away with them as the construction method is rather nice.

That sounds intriguing- I have a Guy Laroche dress just waiting for an excuse to be made up…

At the next Vogue sale I’m getting the 1556 pleated dress and the gothic art teacher dress. I make a lot of dresses but rarely wear them – it’s a thing I’m going the change this autumn.

I like dresses for work, it saves all that chopping and changing when you put on an outfit, decide the top is wrong [or has a dinnerstain on the front in my case] swap the top, the skirt looks wrong, swap that, the shoes look wrong etc etc. Dress + shoes and done. More time lying in bed!
