SWAP 2018 #3 or is it?: Style Arc Daisy TROUSERS [not pants] in black linen.
For once, I pre-washed this to soften it up. It’s quite a heavy-weight, and I was concerned that the trousers might be a bit too voluminous and stiff. Even after washing, it’s got some heft, so we’ll see how this works out eh?
I started with the feature patch pockets. All good, and my topstitching came out really nice for once.
I whizzed the rest of the seams together- mainly using the overlocker, but ‘felling’ the seam allowances down for reinforcement as I’m not too fond of the narrow StyleArc seam allowances on woven fabric- it’s been known to pull apart! I slipped them on…and despite my monkey arms, I couldn’t reach the pockets.
THEN I remembered that someone had mentioned this. DOH! Side seams [overlocked] had to be carefully unpicked, and then the pockets removed, moved up THREE INCHES and all sewn back together again.
Then I couldn’t find my giant reel of elastic. I hunted high and low. And eventually [of course] found it exactly where I’d first looked. What foxed me was I still think of it as a ‘giant reel] and it’s now a scant 2.5″ across. I mean, I’m not about to run out, but it was originally nearly a foot across! [Do you find you don’t see things as they now ARE, but as they once WERE??]
Anyhow, I attached the waistband elastic, and found that NOW the waistband stitching cut across the top of the pockets. I shrugged and carried on- that can be changed easily enough. Then I tried them on again and…no. The missus looked askance and said ‘blimey they’re baggy!’
As soon as I put my hands in the pockets, they started to slide, despite the elastic being a full 5″ less than my ‘waist’. And they make me look VAST. I smooshed the fabric back to fit my hips better, and I didn’t mind the look of the wide legs, but I just can’t face tackling these again right now.
The pockets will have to come off AGAIN. The waistband may work better with a drawstring. And I will have to taper the hips right down, with gawd knows what effect on the rest of the things. Too much trouble for right now, I want to make something that’s a quick fix. I don’t seem to be very lucky with woven trousers.
Right bugger this for a game, I’m going to zoom up the nice, tried and tested, easy peasy pieced B6287 top.
