Sub-Dued…

  1. That’s such a pity…all that faffing around for bugger all. I’m really surprised there aren’t blogs out there of people trying to make this with their own comments/problems.
I also noticed he seemed to have acres of fabric to drape compared to his/your tube version, and that didn’t quite look right.
I was cheering you on from the sidelines. Sorry to see it ended so badly.

  2. LMAO I was laughing so much picturing you trying to finagle your way into your dress. Is your wife OK now? It must have been traumatic for you both. Can you save some of the fabric for another project ?

    1. I think too much has been cut away…the missus doesn’t seem unduly traumatised, although the faces she was pulling were a picture. She said it looked like a bad duvet, so perhaps I won’t bother at all. Hmmmm

  3. Oh no, how frustrating! Good sewing time and good fabric wasted, what a shame. It has been very interesting to read along and it’s given my brain a bit of a workout thinking about how it all works, but I’m sorry it was such a dud.

    1. The pattern is a dud. I suspect this is why I haven’t found a single review of anyone who has made it up as is- only those who have followed the video lecture method. The sheer quantity of fabric is daunting…but the business of making the holes WAY bigger than they needed to be was what annoyed me most. How the hell do you fix a hole? Well, you could sew toning/contrasting jersey over it and then experiment I suppose….

  4. Sorry, but did have a laugh at this!! I think it was the hole over the belly that finished me off (where’s the laughing icon when you need it?). Sorry for the waste of fabric but thanks for the entertainment.
    Cheers xx

    1. ah well if I can turn it into entertainment, all is not lost. Who knows? I may drag it back out and contrive something with the aid of the toning jersey…not yet though, I need to sulk!

  5. Holy moly, what a lot of work gone to waste. I wonder if the lack of negative reviews is indicative of people struggling with the pattern and assuming it is due to their lack of skills, not the pattern itself. That’s the feeling I get from a lot of sub par indie patterns, anyway.

    1. I think that’s the case. The Centre for Pattern Design assumes top end skills, as you may be able to tell from the brevity of the instructions. The basic principle of the subtraction method is absolutely fine, I didn’t struggle with that…but this simply DOES NOT work. All the versions I have seen made by ‘normal’ people just does the bodice outline subtraction, then maybe one or at most 2 small circles cut out. I haven’t seen anyone successfully demonstrate this business of going in and out of the holes! The only Indie designer I fell foul of is the truly terrible Hot Patterns, all of which I binned with much swearing.

  6. A special category: Unreviewed because WTF?
As ever, as always, all the love in the world for taking one for the team Sewing PerSisters. Take yourself out for beverages and yardages. And there’s always showstudio.com/project/design_download_alexander_mcqueen, which has about forty pattern pieces if memory serves.

    1. Oh yes! It’s a beauty! I’m going with the excessively draped and riffled OkiStyle Westwood-esque outfit next, that should cheer me [the wedding dress project is not going to be any trouble, it’s nothing new to me]

  7. Oh no! This process has been fascinating but I have a horrible sneaking suspicion that I may have suggested this pattern to you too?!! 😱😱😱 Well if you can’t make it work there is no hope for lesser mortals. As erniek3 said thank you for taking one for the team. Hopefully you have helped saved future effort and precious fabric from the same fate.

  8. What a shame I was sure if anybody could you would subdue the circles and achieve something wearable. Such a shame about the loss of the lovely purple linen. But just think of all the laughter you blessed sewists around the world with – the mental images – priceless.

Once you have had your sulk (completely understandable and necessary) I wondered if it could be made into a dress from the bodice part using assorted fabrics to fill in the holes a la Koos van den Akker.

  9. Roll the whole lot up and stick it in a plastic bag and put the plastic bag at the back of the sewing space. Job done!
Been there- done that too. Bet you lie awake at night though still trying to figure it all out.

    1. I figured it out-but the instructions are dud lol. With the size of my ‘hip circles’ 25% of the fabric was removed, PLUS the quantity from round the bodice. It’s hardly surprising, given the random positioning of the circles, that you can end up with an unwearable doily. Only a stick insect could make that work…

  10. And here I was feeling sorry for myself for staying up *way* past my bedtime to cut out a tunic out of slinky, roll-y, but lusciously red jersey, only to find out this morning I had ruined the yardage in the pre-wash by sticking it in with my darks. Couldn’t see all the black splotches over everything last night in the dim light.
Ok I’m still upset about that, but you definitely had a worst time of it!! I wish there were a way to do the fabulous without flushing so much time and money on duds.

    1. I have to remind myself [and look in the Crate of Shame for evidence] that I don’t actually have many duds. Most of my normal sewing is fast and fabulous, quick gratification, and not many things are misjudged so that they work out, but don’t get worn. It improves with time! However, I do like to try new stuff to dodge boredom, and this is the price. Ah well. Maybe I will fix it. One day.

Are you going to review the pattern on Pattern Review DF or have you had enough? I love that Okistyle stuff and I’m going to try the Joker shirt when I’ve got through everything else I’m sewing.

  11. Totally agree. I’ve had lots of great advice from Pattern Review including what not to attempt. It’s really useful when several pople have reviewed a pattern and they all find the same snag.

  12. Hello Im a bit of a lurking watcher of your blog posts. You make me laugh. So thanks.
I really felt sorry this project went so off piste for you. By chance I watched a u tube of Julian Robert’s at Derby university. Instead of making a dress he was deconstructing several, and for the first time I think I realized that Julians cutting plans didn’t involve the body passing through the holes he had cut. He was effectively making black holes or tunnels in the fabric which then distorted the excess fabric around the body into overhanging loops and twists. Sorry if Im not explaining very well. I just thought it might be worth investing the time to watch one more 2 part video before you condemn the man to the land of designers only to be considered if your hips are smaller than a teenage boys. I still find the concept intriguing though haven’t found a spare 6 meters of fabric to squander to my curiosity yet. If to use the scottish vernacular your just too scunnered to consider anything more to do with subtraction method I would understand.
Down with the presser foot: onwards and upwards……..

    1. lol thanks! In all the videos, he uses considerably more fabric. This pattern was not produced by him personally [I think] but by the Centre for Pattern Design. I will revisit it eventually, but with way more fabric, and way fewer holes. As this one is supposed to be lined, you couldn’t go through the holes anyway, but even so, there isn’t enough fabric left for anyone but a stick insect. It’s a brilliant method, I can’t wait to get it right…one day! Glad you’re enjoying the fun, don’t just lurk, join the chat!

  13. Oh no! I was hoping you would pull it off! Well at least you have put in a good effort and a good warning for the rest of us. I suppose all those metres of fabric would look lovely on one of those “stick figured” models, but not me! I am curious about the “tube with circles for you hips to go through” but NO I won’t be trying it myself! Thank you for the review! 😁👍
