Tomato/tomata…
Irrelevant to the dress, but I love the song. There’s an interview with Peter Gabriel where he describes the song’s origins- I just know it makes the hairs on my neck stand up, good enough for me!
Back to the sewing: Style Arc ‘Jacinta’ maxi dress, poly jersey, heavy ponte, quite beefy. I got this from a Facebook de-stash group [no, I still haven’t bothered to post any of the stuff I want to sell] It’s fairly pot luck as the people selling have no idea what they have. Everything is ‘fabric’ or ‘cotton’ and it is hard going to get more info than that. I spent about twenty squid on this lot, a long length of bright green, and two shorter lengths in cobalt blue and navy. I’ve used some of the navy for a rather nice skirt, [see following post on the Halle skirt] but I’m getting a bit lax on blogging as I have to catch the missus between bike rides to get photos! I will catch up, honest!
Anyway. I took advantage of the colours to do a little colour blocking, and was not all that convinced…but I really like it. The V neck is just right, the fit is good, and I happy with the secret pyjamas/kaftan feel of this. The poly is not hot and sweaty [as sometimes happens these days] but feels cool to the touch, and quite silky despite its bulk. All done on the overlocker apart from the sensibly simple way to do the V neck binding- sew it as a round neck then put a small dart in. So quick.
Sewing the sleeve hems was a BITCH though-neither stretch needle not jersey needle did the trick, wondertape didn’t help, no zigzag would work. In the end I stuck it don with tape, stretched it out by hand, and did tiny straight stitches. That worked anyway. The hem hem is not done and may not be, as the weight of the jersey is stretching the dress out so I just keep chopping a bit more off until it settles.
*latest update: I wore this the other day, it’s been through the wash, and when I tried it on it was dragging on the floor. I chopped 2.5 inches off, shook it out, tried it on…then chopped TWO MORE inches off. I’m still not hemming it, it may yet grow more!
I think this will cut down well for a nice T shirt, and also make more dress/kaftan numbers. And that’s it. Fast, simple, what’s not to love?
Colour blocking is really stricking. I love blue and green together never understood why it was a no no.

Is it a no-no? Bugger lol. I like it, it’s bold, and comfy too. Sorted!

My nana always said “blue and green should never be seen, except inside a washing machine, or if there’s something in between”. I guess she thought nature just… clashed?

I like the shape of the raglan pieces. Definitely a good one for colour blocking!

It’s a nice simple one. I’ve had it sitting there since about April, and done nothing

Funny how patterns suddenly come into their own when the right bit of fabric or the right weather arrives!
