Totally immersed in Oz coz, and making excellent progress. It’s not just munchkins folks! There’s more than 20 kids involved, as the show ia largely double-cast, and the dancers/extras are all playing multiple parts, some needing four or five costume changes.
Very few roles have been cast so that costumes can be shared, even with extreme ingenuity, so I’ve been busy making:
- 2 Glindas
- 2 wicked witches
- 2 tin ‘men’
- 7 munchkins [already blogged]
Cut out and ready to sew:
- 1 lion onesie [this WILL be shared with some jiggery pokery to allow for a 6″ height difference]
On the table ready to start cutting
- 9 Emerald City outfits
Awaiting time or eBay deliveries
- 3 crows
- 2 owls
- 2 mice
- 5 guards
- the wizard himself
- a flying monkey
- Emerald City doorman
- 2 Aunt Ems* [* these ‘normal’ characters will largely be scavenged from costume stock rather than made by me]
- 1 Uncle Henry*
- 2 Hanks*
- 2 Hunks*
- 2 Zekes*
- 2 Miss Gulches*
- 1 professor Ozmund
- 2 scarecrows [raffia arrived yesterday]
A mere bagatelle I’m sure you’ll agree?

I live in the Washington DC area and am just starting the process of costuming for the wizard of oz! Lots of green in my future! Best wishes to you and your cast!

Wow. Many of us sisters of the needle have done costume duty (I once had to make a God costume), but you have gone above and beyond. I can’t wait to see what your facial mind and hands comes up with.

I’ve missed doing this sort of thing for ages- fast and dirty, sparkly and brash. The kids are very appreciative already, much twirling [and these are pretty tough inner city kids…]

Crikey is this a new direction for SWAP? Love the teaser pics especially the mask. Truly amazing what you are achieving with minimal budget. Hope the production lives up to your costumes.

lol it doesn’t really matter if it does, the kids are having a ball, and some are learning some valuable lessons about design and creativity as I show them my mood boards and insist on sticking to colour palettes. ANyone can do it with a BIG budget, the fun is in the constraints [same as for SWAP really isn’t it?]
