…and so did the legendary fat lady. It’s done, it’s finished.
StyleArc Ziggi jacket #5, the finale
All bar the pics of Dawn wearing it!
Several hours of hand sewing [what was I thinking of] and this simple l [ha!] little jacket is done. Hand sewn top stitching, hand sewn lining insertion blah blah. Good grief. I had to take quite a lot out of the side seams first- these ‘darts’ are 2″ wide at the bottom edge. I added small shoulder pads made from sew-in bag wadding.
Fortunately, she loves it, and is working out where we need to go so she has a need for a lightweight, posh jacket.
I’ve just taken some snaps of it on a hanger, which will have to do until we get home from work NOT exhausted, sorry about that.
Key issues with this, summarised:
- Zip lengths quoted are out- don’t buy your zips until you have fiddled with the pattern and know what size you want.
- There are NO instructions for putting the pocket zips in, other than elsewhere on the internet, try Communing with Fabric or Sew Maris.
- Sleeves are shorter than usual
- Jacket fit as it stands is more boxy than the image implies, you may need quite a lot of shaping at the side seams if you like a more fitted look
- The pockets as placed fit INSIDE the front facing AND hem allowance- raise them, lengthen the jacket OR be very careful when inserting the lining and hemming that you don’t catch them down
- Instructions for the whole thing are the most unhelpful I’ve yet seen on StyleArc, and yet many, many people have made it…they clearly all did their own thing too.
GOOD things:
- It’s beautifully well drafted, as ever, all pattern pieces match up nicely
- The size/shape of the collar and lapels is very classy
- It’s a very versatile jacket- and lends itself to quite a bit of customisation in blocking, fabrics, and quilting details.
I promise pics of her wearing it as soon as possible! Now to make something for ME I can’t be doing with all this unselfish sewing!
PS, this was apparently my 500th post. Wow!
Wonderful, I want one.

Wow! That is gorgeously gorgeous. It looks like a very expensive high end jacket. I have got serious jacket envy 🙂 Give yourself a big pat on the back. Look forward to the pics.

she spent ages this morning stroking it and arranging it on its hanger lol [she was asleep by the time I finished sewing it] so I think it’s a win!

It’s beautiful! I’m jealous of your wife; my spouse doesn’t doesn’t make me clothes. To be honest-I don’t make him clothes and he never questions my fabric purchases. 🙂 Anyway- another triumph, even if it did make you crazy while making it!

Thank you! I like making her things [but not as much as I like making them for myself] because she truly understands the work that goes in, and relishes all the little details like hand finishing or fancy lining touches.

Thanks- I wouldn’t have bothered on larger pieces, my stitching is too erratic lol I think I got away with this though

What a gorgeous jacket. I am sure that Dawn will appreciate all your hard work. It looks marvellous on the hanger so I am sure it will be a thousand times nicer on a person. Do you think that you will make this again now that you have the process nailed? Looking forward to the pics.Xx

Well I rather fancy copying Ruth’s idea of making one in a stretch fabric…it won’t be binned that’s for sure!

It looks fabulous, and I’m sure Dawn will look stunning in it.
I have had this pattern printed and ready to make for so long it’s ridiculous. I really must get on with it now you have done all the fact finding work. Thanks 😂

Nicely done! I love the quilted/padded look of the shoulders. I still don’t know how you do all that hand sewing – my wrists and fingers would be twisted out of shape.

lol thanks! The hand sewing takes time- if I rushed it, my hands would snarl up too [arthritis is setting in steadily]. Quality needle smake a huge difference, which is something that still surprises me, having always used whatever is available at the market, cheap as chips…but these Clover Black Gold just skim through the work. Also, weirdly, the shorter the needles, the better- which takes getting used to but pays off.

I never even thought about the short quality needles. Great tips, thanks!

It’s something discussed a lot on historical sites, lots of handsewing there!
