You want to know about me? Are you sure? OK, pull up a chair, grab a slice of cake, and take a deep breath as I’m inclined to ramble.
Before we got together [a very long story involving a waste paper bin, a toilet, a flood, and a motorbike seat] she lived next door to me with her mum and dad. Isn’t that sweet? I got the girl next door!
Before that I lived there with my now-ex-husband, three kids, two cats, and my father-in-law for nearly 25 years. Doesn’t time fly?
During those years I started teaching myself to sew clothes, after the usual horror story experiences of school sewing lessons. And I started making clothes for other people. And I didn’t charge nearly enough (who does, to start with?). And eventually I fulfilled a dream and got involved in wardrobe and costume-making for a local amateur opera company.
I’ll scan and post some images of that at a later date.
Time moved on, and circumstances changed. I went to college, then university, and became a teacher. I put on school productions, and there will be pics of those too. Thence to working in colleges, and my current post. I also mark A- level exams…
I returned to sewing in a big way in 2012 as I set to work on my youngest daughter’s wedding dress. It involved a whole lot of complicated techniques that I’d never had to use before. I found an online forum, and hence Craftsy and the amazing ‘Couture Dress‘ course by Susan Khalje. Wow. I learned loads, and had the big ego boost of finding that some of the techniques I’d settled on all by myself count as ‘couture’. Go figure! And I thought I was just rubbish at putting in zips by machine…
I made DD’s dress, three bridesmaids’ dresses, my MOB outfit, my lovely fiancée’s Other-Mother-of-the-bride outfit,
the jewellery bouquet, the wedding arch…
oh, and the bride and two of the bridesmaids.
A few months later, my divorce finally came through, and I got cracking on our wedding dresses. (Image at the top of this page). More ‘couture’ work, a helluva lot of beading, bleeding fingers, and a huge sense of satisfaction. (And yes, I did the bouquets and cake again!)
Thoroughly addicted now, I carried on sewing. And on, and on and on. My wardrobe and waistline have expanded- happiness does that don’t you find? I’ve had a great time on The Sewing Forum for three years, (I even found a bridesmaid there) and now I’m here, to ramble on (I told you I would) as I continue to churn out my generally-pretty-random sewing makes.
Clothes for me, clothes for the missus, occasional bits and bobs for other people…and cake. Plenty of cake. Oh yes we love a bit of cake.
And if anyone can tell me how to make sure that the layout I faff with on the editing page looks the same when I go to preview…I’d be VERY grateful!
