Hello!

I first posted my ‘all about me’ info more than 5 years ago apparently, so it’s definitely time to update it. I was planning to just change a few bits and bobs, but hey, most of the photos seem to have evaporated, so perhaps I should just start from scratch…
I’m Elaine, I TURNED 60 today, and I teach A level maths in an inner city school. I married my lovely wife in 2013, and we are chugging along very nicely, thank you for asking. Many of you will have seen her all over the place in my posts here and elsewhere…and you will see many more because she’s beautiful and I love making things for her!
If you hunt about for posts NOT about sewing, you’ll find reminiscences and our origin story…which is quite funny in retrospect!

I started sewing properly after leaving school, I’m self-taught, largely by just buying patterns and fabric with absolutely no idea if they were suitable for my skill level [guess what, they very often weren’t] and just ploughing on through the instructions. I sewed a few things for other people, under-valuing my time immensely as we all do to start with, and learned.
I dropped sewing from time to time as life intervened, and only got back into it big time when my youngest daughter asked me to make her wedding dress. I had no clue how to go about the complex garment she wanted, after years of bouffant eighties wedding and bridesmaid dresses, so found ‘the Sewing Forum’ online and learned everything I needed to know from the geniuses therein.
The Sewing Forum died a few years ago, and has been reborn as ‘The Sewing Place’.
After sewing my daughter’s wedding, I immediately launched into making our own wedding dresses. I’m happy for any excuse to post a pic of my beautiful missus, so here she is!
Mostly I sew for myself, a fair amount for my lovely wife, oddments for other close friends and relatives…and I love some theatrical madness, so if only for that, I’m happy to be back in a school!

This year I’ve mostly been making scrubs for the NHS drive [76 sets to date] and masks. Oh and I just got hit with Bell’s palsy so I’m not blogging pics of me until my face is fixed [fingers crossed]
Just don’t expect to me to blog about home furnishings….or bunting!

Great introduction and lovely pictures. Can’t help with the layout, sorry.

I’m sure someone will sort it…or I’ll bumble into it by accident in my usual haphazard way lol

I think it’s a WordPress thing, though I know that’s no help – sorry. My first blog was with WP and it would’ve driven me mental if I hadn’t got out while the going was still good and shifted over to Blogger.
Thanks for sharing your story. I love a bit of “couture” too, though I’m not as proficient as you. I’m looking forward to reading more posts,
Happy New Year,

Love a blog with a bit of humour to it. Thanks! Maybe I’ll even learn a thing or two. I have sewn some fab kids’ Hallowe’en costumes over the years (good god, no, not my own kids), but would really like to learn how to fit clothes to my own body. Ah, well… one day.

Humour you’ll get, no idea if you’ll learn anything other than some good swear words from time to time lol

I’m on board with that, too! I can shine my halo from time ti time, but I swear like a sailor the rest of the time.

Spooky, I just came on over to your blog because I hadn’t seen a post from you for a while and was wondering if my RSS reader was messed up, and saw you’d updated this page pretty recently. Sorry to hear you’re still grappling with health problems, and wishing you very rapid improvement. I’ve been reminding myself of your steampunk SWAP – inspirational stuff.
