…Get a hat!
Well that was easier than expected!
For those who don’t want to peruse the diagrams or translate the Japanese instructions:
- cut out all pieces on the bias, adding seam allowances, and fuse to interfacing. [I should have fused then cut, but didn’t pay enough attention]
- sew seam in side crown, press & topstitch
- sew crown to side crown, press
- sew back seams in two brim pieces, press & topstitch
- Assemble brim, bag out, press and baste top edges together
- Assemble crown lining, press [I had plenty left in my scrap of silk crêpe marocain from the party dress that didn’t happen]
- Slip crown lining inside crown, wrong sides together, and baste raw edges
- Attach brim, right sides together, clip and press seam to inside
- Assemble band/bow pieces, right sides together, turn and press. Slipstitch turning openings
- Hand sewing time- attach petersham ribbon over the brim/crown seams to neaten, plus a few stitches to keep the lining sitting nicely up inside the crown [I hand stitched-in-the-ditch]
- Attach trim. Then take it off, undo the slipstitching, shorten the trim band by about three inches, reassemble, re-press, re-attach. Swear a bit.
And that’s it! One luxury warm hat…the crown is taller than expected, but I don’t mind. What colour shall I make next?
I think I need some more, what do you think?
Very nice job–it does work well with the coat.

I’m very happy that for some reason my ugly mug suits hats! I love ’em, which is why I enjoy steampunk so much. I mean, I’VE GOT A PITH HELMET!

You solved the problem of the the inside pretty quickly – I only noticed your PR thread this morning. I love the hat, especially the bow which gives it a 20’s vibe. Très chic, madame.

A smashing hat, effortlessly elegant, and you pull it off very stylishly. The coat looks great as well. I will investigate to find out if I have a ‘hat-face’ because so far I have only worn hats at weddings (not to my taste) and wolly hats when it is cold (nothing to write home about but practical). Does this one keep your ears warm?

Thanks! I love it, other staff are full of compliments, as are the few West Indian kids who saw fit to make mention…the Asian kids were shocked to see an Anglo on such a bright colour I think! That resulted in a few feeble ‘insults’ which just made me laugh.
