Short Cuts

Hurrah!  I’ve done as much marking as I can stomach [there#s always a bit of bonus marking up for grabs, but I truly don’t have the energy.  Trip-trap into the sewing room, fondling lengths of fabric and making FAST decisions.  Those scissors NEEDED me I tell you!

So, a few hours later, I have a lovely pile of FAST sewing, all good and easy so I can get to wear them asap.

The border print jersey first- Vogue 1552, previously made up with long sleeves and cowl neck in red leopard jersey.  I wear it a LOT, it’s very comfortable and still looks only minimally sack-like.  This time, scoop neck and sleeveless.  I may be able to wear this over a T shirt in cooler weather [like this summer perhaps?]

Because it’s a border print, I of course ran into issues getting the wiiiiiidddddeeeeee pattern pieces out of it, but did a little judicious folding in of pattern edges AND pieced a little for the back pointy bits.  What ARE we supposed to call these extended side bits?  The seams are unlikely to be invisibly , but I hope the drapes at the sides will disguise them, and if not, I only did it on the back pieces anyway.  What I can’t see won’t bother me at all!

Then I got cracking on some t shirts, four altogether.  I LOVE this New Look pattern, it fits really nicely, I like the scoop of the neckline, it’s easy to adapt sleeve length.  I cut out 2 bodies in the teal elastane knit from Frumble [fabulous stuff, go buy some of their premium knits NOW I command thee].  One will have 3/4 sleeves from the stripe remnant, the other will have short sleeves in the teal.  The foil bumble bees will be long sleeved, and I omitted the CB shaping to make that one just a little looser than usual.  The maths/science print has the short sleeves too.  I have VERY few smart t shirts, the last few summers at college allow for being very casual.

Next I picked out this lovely otter print on crisp cotton [also Frumble I think] and matched it to the Jennifer Lauren ‘Afternoon Blouse’.  I really must try this as a shift dress, summer COULD still happen…

I’ve just ripped this into skirt lengths, and removed a strip for a waistband and cut a couple of rectangles for patch pockets.  I really should have thought of that before I started, but hey ho, the joy of ripping crisp cotton was tough to resist.  This will be simply pleated to the waistband with a side zip.  It’s so CUTE!

Lastly [for today] I cut out this free Drop Sleeve Top from the Avid Seamstress.  I saw it on ‘Following the Thread’ and thought it would be nice in this very drapey viscose print.  It’s supposed to have a button loop fastening at the back neck but I think it may well pull on without needing it.

And that’s where I got to today.  I still have some items waiting to be sewn up from just before the Oz efforts began, and a couple of [meh] quick home sewing jobs, the missus wants new voiles and the shower curtain needs shortening .  Fast jobs, but I still hate them lol.

Better get to it…which one shall I sew up first?  Hmmm?

    Is ‘panniers’ the right word for drapey side extensions? Can’t think of a better one right now but that doesn’t seem quite right either.

  2. Very industrious! I’m always in awe when you batch cut as it’s not something I ever do. I really must try it.
    I don’t have any other ideas about the side drapey bits. Catherine’s suggestion seems like a good one. Drapey bits generally, panniers if it needs to sound more high faluting 😉

    1. Mass cutting is fun- and I like seeing a pile of things ready to sew, that I can fit to my mood or the time available. Already knocked out the feathery top last night, and wearing it to work. It’s a lot less boxy than I expected, I rather like it. Pics later
